Kevin Brown Wins Wal-Mart BFL on Degray Lake

Kevin Brown takes the BFL Trophy on Degray Lake

Story by Terrance Narveson

Kevin Brown capitalized on his big bass (a 6-15 "toad" - big bass of the day)  to take the win on Lake Degray
at the Arkie Divisions (Wal-Mart BFL) second stop of the season. The day started out with storms lurking and
rain falling as the 152 boat field waited with anticipation. The weather may have started out bad, but the
fishing was great as there were almost 100 limits weighed in today. It seemed as though almost everyone in
the field brought  fish to the scales and this was probably the biggest weigh-in for an Arkie BFL event. Here is
how the leaders caught their fish:

First place Boater – Kevin Brown 20lbs 12ozs

Kevin was fishing the lower lake throwing a Carolina-rigged brush hog on the inside edge of the grass. He
supported his limit with a 6lb 15oz kicker which was his second keeper for the day. This was the building
block to his 20lb sack. He keyed on spawning flats and points, and fished slow to get his bites.

Kevin took home top honors across the board as he won the Ranger cup money, Big Bass, and first place for
total of $6,740.00 in winnings.

                                 Clinton Mayfield

Second place Boater – Clinton Mayfield - 16lbs 9ozs -  $2490

Clinton did his homework before the tournament and had fish found on beds all over the lake. The weather
did not make it easy for his sight fishing pattern but he improvised by cruising the bank to spot the fish then
pulling back and fan casting to the spot. He was using a Carolina rig and a tube to catch his fish.

                                 Kendall Smith

Third place Boater – Kendall Smith - 15lbs 14ozs - $1662

Kendall started his day on the lower lake throwing jigs but only caought one keeper. He then moved to
Brushy Creek area and fished pockets and an island where he filled out his limit, plus a few. He was catching
his fish in Brushy Creek area on a Carolina-rig.

                                  Jeff Vanderpool

Fourth place Boater – Jeff Vanderpool 15lbs 10ozs $1162

Jeff caught all his fish on a Carolina rig fishing close to the takeoff area. He claimed he only burned 1 gallon
of gas.

`

                                         Matthew Mize

Fifth place Boater – Matthew Mize 15lbs 1oz $996

Matthew caught 18 fish with only two that did not measure. All his fish were caught on a Carolina-rigged
green pumpkin lizard.

Pete Clark takes the Co-angler trophy!!

First place Co-angler – Pete Clark 15lbs 4ozs $2490

Pete started the day throwing a jig but changed over to Carolina rig to complete his limit. He caught 10
keepers with the last one coming minutes before check-in.

Second place Co-angler – Donny Holloway 14lbs 8ozs $1245

Donny fished with Kendall Smith and they both caught fish all day, but breaking from the trend of the other
winners he caught his fish on a “shakey head” worm.

In the Boat with Get5Bass: Terrance Narveson

I fished with Tim Coyle today and I seem to be starting a trend, as I think every boater I have fished with this
year has cashed a check. We started in the back of the marina fishing docks and some of the small coves
catching a few fish in both places. I was catching fish on a fluke and a Carolina-rig lizard, but no keepers.
Next we moved to pockets off the main lake fishing down the inside grass line with just a few bites. We did not
catch a ton of fish like some of the other guys but when we did they were quality. I caught my only keeper on
a steep bank in one of the pockets. (Thank god for my Burrhead Flat Bottom jig head, it produced for me
again!!) After going through a few pockets we moved to the Arlie Moore area and started fishing shallow in
the brush. I could not get another keeper bite, and Tim finished out his limit and culled twice before we had to
come in. Tim caught his fish early on a senko and the rest on a Limit Finder Spinnerbait made by Bob
Howard. I had a great time despite my lack of putting more fish in the boat. I will see you on Greers Ferry in
May.
