Kevin Thompson Wins TBF State Championship on Lake Hamilton

Kevin Thompson Wins with 19.24 pounds!

Story by Terrance Narveson

Lake Hamilton hosted the First Annual Arkansas TBF State Tournament this
weekend. Twelve teams competed for a Ranger 519 and to qualify for the Regional
Tournament to be held on the Tennessee -Tombigbee Waterway in Columbus , MS
this summer. A cold front threatened to put a damper on the fishing and may have
slowed the movement of fish to the shallows, but as the anglers adjusted to the
conditions there were a few who rose above the challenge. Here are the top finishers
and how they caught their fish:

Boater Division

First place – Kevin Thompson - 19.24 pounds

Fished shallow both days with Carolina Rig brush hogs and jigs on the side of pockets
in the mid lake area. He had a milk run that produced a limit both days for 19.24 lbs.
Kevin also won the BFL event on Ouachita earlier this year on the Co-angler side.
Way to go Kevin and we hope to see you amongst the top finishers again.

Second Place – Donnie Cobb 17.09lbs

With his win at the Regional last year in Oklahoma, Donnie has proven to be among
the top anglers in Arkansas again. Donnie caught his fish in the mid lake area the
first day on jigs and spinnerbaits, but had to adjust to changing conditions the second
day to secure his second place finish. He caught his second day fish on the lower lake
in one pocket on a spinnerbait. Donnie is preparing for his trip to Lake Wylie , NC
for the TBF Nationals and we wish him the best of luck.

Third Place – Troy Hood 16.91lbs

Get5 was unable to talk to Troy after the tournament.

Fourth Place – Shane Malone 16.28lbs

Shane fished the lower lake both days with rattletraps, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and
jigs. He had the big sack of the tournament and big bass which leaped him up to a
fourth finish on the second day. The 6.5lb “hawg” helped him earn a strong finish.

Co-Angler Division

Rick Duren Wins Co-Angler Title

                                                  Rick Duren

First Place – Rick Duren 16.27lbs

Caught fish on just about everything he had in the tackle box  on the first day. The
second day he had to catch his fish on Carolina rig. All his fish were caught in the 5-8
ft range off the sub-points going into the spawing bays. “It was tough both days”, is
how Rick summed up the fishing on Lake Hamilton .

Second Place – Bill Lawrence 14.29lbs

The first day he caught his fish on a brush hog with a dipped tail in 14ft of water.
They caught a lot of fish the first day and he had one good fish to give him the lead
after day one. Day two proved to be more of a challenge for him, as he only had two
bites. He and his partner fished the lower lake and struggled to catch their fish. With
his big first day catch and the two bass from the second day he was able to stay in the
top six and qualify for the state team.

Third Place – Eric Von Kinsey 13.03lbs

Caught his fish on Brush hogs in the mid lake area in 3ft of water. He was Texas
rigging at first and had to change to Carolina rigs as the bite changed. Later in the
day he threw jerkbaits to finish out his limit. Most of the fish were males pulling up
for the spawn.
