It's Jerkbait Time!!! Tie on a Jackall Squad Minnow!!!
The Jackall Squad Minnow 115 takes a Lake Maumelle 4-pounder!!!
Story by Frank Leone
It's that time of year. Ice Storms, frosty mornings, and even an occasional
snow flake have fallen in Arkansas and water temperatures are at their
lowest point of the year. What do you need to do next time you hit the water.
Fish a Jewel jig super slow? Find a group of fish on the graph and drop a
spoon? Both of these patterns can be deadly and productive, but if you've
got good water clarity and a the fish are eating a jerkbait, the Jackall Squad
Minnow might be your best bet. Terrance and I recently put the Squad
minnow to the test on Lake Maumelle, and were impressed by the results.
The Jackall Squad Minnow is available in 3 sizes and 10 colors. The Squad
Minnow 95 is 4-inches long and
weighs a 1/2 oz. It is similar in
shape to a Pointer, but has a
different action. I would describe
the Squad Minnows action as a
"rolling zig-zag". It's zig zag is
best produced with a sharp jerks
of the rod. When paused between
jerks, the bait stops immediately
and suspends, an action that can't
be ignored by a hungry bass.
Although the Squad Minnow 115
and 128 are longer and leaner in
appearance, we found the action of all three baits to be nearly identical.
During our day on Lake Maumelle, we found the bass a bit shallower than
expected. We started the morning
on steep banks in the 10 -15 foot
range, but by mid-morning we didn't
have any takers and made are way
to a shallower bank. The shallow
bank had a line of water willow grass
in the 4 foot range, random stumps,
and chunk rock - perfect bass
habitat! We didn't make it very far
down the bank when the first fish
of the day smoked my Squad
Minnow 115 (Tennessee Shad)! It's
always a confidence booster to get
that first fish in the boat!!! Working the
bait with a jerk, jerk, pause, jerk type of
action seemed to produce the best results, and not 5 casts later and a "tank"
blasted the Squad Minnow!!! Terrance put the net job on her and we had
a 4-pounder in the boat!!! That's the
kind!!! Felt like a garbage can in the
42 degree water! While the Squad
looked great and had a very unique
action, I was also very impressed
with the castability of this bait. The Squad
minnow has a weight transfer system that
allows it to cast like a bullet! Although we
found the fish shallow on this day
(5-7 ft.), the Squad Minnow will also
excel on deep flats and channel swings. The
winter jerkbait bite should last through the pre-spawn, so the next time your
on the lake tie on a Jackall Squad Minnow and Hold on!!! For more
