Randy Allen and Ladd Shannon Win the Mill Creek Bass
Club Open on Lake Dardanelle
Story by Terrance Narveson
Mill Creek Bass Club had their annual Winter Blow out open tournament
this weekend on Lake Dardanelle and with only 9 boats it was a grudge
match for the top spot.
The team of Ladd Shannon and Randy Allen had the days big fish a 6.61
monster and took first place with 17.43lbs.
Second Place was Jared Allen and Wayne Dixon and they got snubbed
by less then half a pound with 17.23lbs.
Third Place was Billy Albert and Terrance Narveson with a respectable
15.17lbs.
Fourth was the team of Shawn Gordon and Tray Huddleston who had
12.95lbs.
The whole story of how we all caught our fish is in my In the Boat
Column.

Billy Albert and I got to fish again and neither one of us got to pre-fish
for this tournament. With the seasonal winter pattern, there are a few
options on Dardanelle and one of the most common is running to strip
pits. The morning started out as an all out battle to get into the big pit
and all four of the top finishers got there basically at the exact same
time, all hitting their respective favorite spots to start out. It didnt take
Billy and I long before we had our first fish on a Jackall Squirrel DD79. In
about three more casts I caught another one. The bite was on and the
cold water fish were really eating this morning. Billy asked me for
another Squirrel, but I didnt have any more so gave him a Squadminnow
in the Chartueuse stripe Ayu color and in about 10 minutes he was
putting number three in the boat. Not bad, we had three descent
keepers in about 45 minutes. Now we were fishing the front end of the
big pit and everyone else ran to the back, where we could not
see what they were catching. I was later told both teams of
Shannon/Allen and Dixon/Allen were crushing them on the Jackall
Squirrel as well. This has been the hot lure the past couple years on
Dardanelle. So after our early morning flurry it was like the fish just
disappeared. We moved around and hit a few other places in the pit and
decided to check out some of the other ones because they might not
have had anyone else putting any pressure on them. First we ran up the
Ski pit and hit a primary bank that has been holding fish, but the rain
had stained the water a little too much so we could not get anything to
come up. Another quick move over to the Softball pit and we found
clearer water but no fish to show for it. It was now about 10:30 and we
decided to hit the big pit again. When we pulled in there were
Dixon/Allen and they were camped out but not catching anything. We
gave it about 40 minutes and decided to hit some main lake points, only
to find that the water had a little more color then we were looking for
and the bait fish were no where to be found. So back to the clear water
we went. We spent a little time in the big pit, and just before we left
we made a quick stop on the spot where we caught all our fish. This is
when Billy hooked up with our biggest fish on a pointer and that made
number 4. We ran to an old spot in the ski pit we used to catch fish and
tried to get our last keeper before time ran out. It was about 10 after
2:00 and we needed one more fish. This last little stretch of bank has
payed off before, and it wasn't long and Billy hooked up with a short
fish. About two casts later, I caught our last keeper on the Squirrel and
we were so happy we finally got our limit. It was literally about 6 hours
since our last bite and now we just wanted to get a bigger one to cull
one of our small fish to have a chance. Time was not on our side as we
had to come in before getting another fish, but what a day we had.
