I fished with Doug Powell and we had high hopes for some good fishing and a good time on the
water. It is still amazing to see the lake high from the spring rain but along with the high water are
new challenges. Most of the usual places we would fish were buried under the abyss of new water
and the inviting tree lines were always on our minds. We started down by point 2 looking for a
topwater bite and some smallies around the bluff lines. There were a few fish breaking but nothing
that would come up to get our baits. It didnt take long for the sun to bear down on the water and
with an unresponsive topwater bite we quickly started fishing below the surface. We were throwing
Jewel Eakins' jigs, Worms, Brush Hogs, and Tubes. I had only one bite on the jighead worm and lost
that fish. This is something I have gotten used to on this lake after my day out here during the BFL.
We moved to a point that had a park close by and it was still flooded and when we pulled up there
were fish breaking all around. I just knew we were going to hit them here at the right time. Again we
had no luck with the breaking fish so we tried throwing rigs. It was a long time before we got a bite
and again I lost this fish no thanks to the submerged trees. We moved down the parking lot
throwing jigs, rigs, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. I finally caught my first fish on a RC 1.5 but it was
short. After moving down the road we decided it was time for another move. We came back to the
Narrows and stopped by the bridge and just pulled out from the bank to hit some of the submerged
brush and the old bank line. Doug caught two small keepers along the bank in basically two casts. I
still did not have a keeper and was now feeling the pressure to produce. My next cast I had a fish,
short again. I just could not get a break. With time running out we moved closer to the ramp area
and with heavy boat traffic coming in and out of the ramp it would be tough to get another fish
quickly. Almost my first cast to a small patch of brush and with a random boat floating up on the
same piece of brush I just cast on I had a bite. I set the hook only to find out I had become tangled
in the brush with the fish. I gave him some slack and he swam out. It was a decient fish and I had a
sigh of relief that it was my first keeper. I flipped him in the boat and realized it was a Black and it
was going to be close. On the board he went and of course it was short, just over 14.5 inches. This
was really not my day. Time was out and I nothing to show except the sun burn from the blazing
sun. I look forward to BFL on Dardanelle this weekend and I know things can only get better from
here.
