Practice Day:
Friday morning we put in at the narrows and headed up towards Devils Fork
and fished a bluff point. We never caught any keepers, so we moved toward the
Sugarloaf area and decided to run some shallow bushes and possibly pull out
on some Carolina rig fish. The bushes were holding fish and we were catching
them on flukes, topwaters, crankbaits, and a few bites on swimbaits and
jigs. After missing a few on one stretch we wanted to see if pulling out
might produce some of those short strikers that were following our baits in.
I quickly found out that the smallmouth were sitting out there ready to
hammer anything that came their way. A quick check on two other places
showed us the fish were there as well. With half the day gone it was time to
check the lower end. We ran to Eden Isle and had a few bites but nothing
special. Another couple stops and the bite just seemed lack luster on the
clear water. I had a place in Cove Creek that typically holds fish and when
we pulled up there it was on. They were smallmouth and they were keepers.
After leaving that area quickly we ran to a pocket by Salt Creek and I
caught a small fish on a swim bait but we could not get anything else. It
was time to head in and I felt that the bushes up by Sugarloaf would be a
great starting area.
Tournament Day:
Thunderstorms hit the area the area Friday night and I felt with the cloudy
weather the topwater bite was going to be hot. I drew Mike Andrus as a
co-angler and he was ready to rip some fish as well. We got to the first bank
and it took about ten casts and he had a blow up on his chugbug but missed
it. With a quick cast back in he busted the small fish but lost it coming to
the boat. I then caught a small fish practically at the same time. It looked
great from here, but as we moved down the bank nothing was coming up for our
topwater and the rain had set in pretty good. I had no idea where the fish
had gone and it appeared that they may have moved out to deeper water so we
pulled out from the bank a little and that is when Mike got his first keeper
on a Football head Jig. A nice 2.5lb Black is a good start to the day. We
were getting bites but were unable to hook up. I thought maybe a bank around
the corner might have some wind on it and that could be what we needed. Sure
enough there was wind and we did catch a couple small fish but could not get
any keepers. We moved back to the starting area to hit the deeper ledge
where we had our bites earlier and this time when we pulled up we started
catching fish. They were small but at least they were eating. I was throwing
a Big Bite Baits Rojas Fighting Frog 3.5 in Green Pumpkin paired up with my
Dobyns 735c Champions Series rod and my Carolina rig weight was Jewel's new
egg weight "The ROCK", which is awesome for dragging. It had the right feel
for dragging a rig and the power to rip the fish out when they were in some
of the flooded trees. I got my first keeper and Mike got his second before
we left and headed back down the lake. As we were running down lake he
pointed out a place to hit real quick but we never got a bite. He then said
to stop in Bud Creek and hit a couple ledges where he likes to fish and I
was able to get a nice keeper Kentucky on my rig setup. It was about 12:30
and I told him we needed to fill out our limit and I knew a ledge that
always has fish and it was close to the ramp. We made our way there and as
we got on the ledge the fish were there. These fish were absolutely crushing
my Fighting Frog and I filled out my limit and was able to cull some small
fish. It seemed like as the boat traffic picked up the fishing got better
and most of the time the fish had my fighting frog before it hit bottom. It
was some of the fastest rig fishing I have been on lately I just couldn't
seem to get any more good keepers.
