Mill Creek Bass Club went to Lake Nimrod this weekend and it was a small fish bite but Terrance
Narveson took home the win. There have been reports of a fish feeding frenzy but the cool front
that came through this weekend may have set the big fish back a little but it didnt stop the small
ones from biting.
1st Place 9.27lbs
Terrance Narveson - It was my first time to fish on Nimrod in about 4 yrs and it was the first time to
be out there as a boater so I was a little nervous as Lake Nimrod is not friendly if you dont know
where you are going. Once I followed the train over to the river I felt back home and ran to my first
spot. A cut off the river that had rock on it. I was throwing a buzzbait with my Dobyns 734c rod so I
could get all the distance and still have the power to rip on the fish when they busted it. 10 minutes
down the bank and I had my first keeper a 3lb "mini hog". The fish absoutly erupted when it hit and
my first thought was here we go. I failed to boat any more keeper fish down that bank but with a few
bites that missed and some baitfish action along the bank I went back down with my Big Bite Cane
Stick and caught 1 more 2lb keeper and lost another one trying to play it out. I moved into the river
and tried some laydowns but didnt get anything. Then a quick run up to sunlight bay and I started
fishing some of the laydowns and shallow banks just off the creek channel and had a few strikes but
never hooked up on the buzzbait. I started throwing the cane stick and caught a couple small fish
but it wasnt until I tied on my RC1.5 that I caught my next keeper. It was small but a move in the
right direction. I kenw another bank that had some better laydowns so I moved there and didnt get
any keepers on the wood. While there I ran into Ricky Biffle and he was swinging away at fish like a
kid at his first tee ball game. I asked him if he was having trouble getting a hook in them and he just
said he thinks they are crappie and if they aren't big enough to eat my bait then I will just rip their lip
off them. I pulled up next to him and tried a crappie jig but never got a bite, but I threw out my cane
stick and caught a keeper. Then he swings one in the boat. As we got to talking he said he had
been catchingthem on the breaks from the pockets to the river like crazy and sure enough they
were stacked up. I fished my way down the bank with my RC 1.5 to cover water faster and caught
another keeper to finish off my limit. Now it was time to start culling. I ran down to another cut but
didnt catch a thing. On to the next one and first cast I caught a short one on my cane stick. Then
had another pick it up and drop it. I figrured there had to be a sweet spot so I picked up the crank
bait and started launching it with my Dobyns 705CB and burning it back. Once I got to the wind
blown point I found them. I think I sat there for an hour catching fish on just about every cast. It was
about every third fish I would get one that would cull a smaller one so the culling process started to
get tough but wiht a good keeper I got it limited down to one fish that I needed to upgrade with. To
finish the day off I just bounced from one place to another culling 1 time at each spot until it was
time to come in. I ended up winning with 9.27lbs and had big bass with 3.30lbs. What a fun day on
the lake.
