Practice Day
I left out Friday morning and fished a few places on the lower end while
waiting for a friend to make it down to the ramp. I did manage to catch a
keeper black on a Squirrel head jig with a Squirrel tail worm just as he
called me to come pick him up at the ramp. From there we ran up the river to
one on the main feeder creeks. We went all the way to the back and worked
our way out. The water was muddy from the recent rain but we did manage to
get 1 keeper on a Jackall Muscle 7+ in crawfish color. Then we ran down to
Arlie Moore and started hitting pockets trying to figure out this bite
people were talking about. Our first stop I decided to hit a point with a
Carolina rig and nailed a keeper Kentucky. As we moved down the bank we did
catch a few slot fish and managed a couple good keepers. We moved to another
pocket and caught some more slot fish and two more keepers. I tried to hit a
couple more points with a Carolina rig but nothing. Stopped in a couple more
pockets and only managed some slot fish and decided to head in for the day.
I felt there were fish in the first pocket and I could probably hit a couple
more to finish out fair in the tournament.
Tournament Day
I ran to the pocket where all the fish came from the day before and all I
managed to do was pull the green slime off my bait most of the morning. A
quick move to the Carolina rig spot and I caught my first non keeper. Moved
down the bank and hooked up with a nice fish that I never turned and the
hook pulled out. I cut across to the other side and started running the bank
with my rattle trap and caught a slot fish. After moving to the other side
of the pocket we found a few more fish they just were slot fish. As we were
near the end of the pocket I caught my first keeper which ended up being my
last fish for the day. I unloaded on rattletraps throwing everything I had
that rattled and it just was not my day to put more then 1 in the boat.
Everything I fished on Friday the produced did not give me anything on
Saturday. The water dropping probably had a little to do with it and the
heavy wind they called for on Saturday did not really affect any of the
places I was fishing. I like Lake Degray but it looks like I we may have
missed the really good time which were the two weeks prior to our
tournament. I will see you on Greers.
