Tournament: Arkansas BassCat Owners Tournament
February 27, 2010
Morgan Point Bendway
Anglers: Jeremy Risley and Andy Case
Place: 4th - 3 bass – 13.51 pounds
Practice: We did not practice for this tournament. We decided to wing it. Heck I hadn’t even been
on the lake since last April!!
February 27th: Derby day began with us heading to an area we have done well in the past.
Morgan Point is notorious for an early morning spinnerbait bite. So we rolled up next to a good
clump of trees. On the first cast, a 15 incher comes and swipes at my spinnerbait about 10 feet
from the boat. I’m thinking awesome; we might be able to catch them on a spinnerbait. Well I was
wrong!! We tried that for about an hour or so with no luck. So we pick up the jig and see if we can
make them bite that. I see a shallow stump and I pitch my jig by it. My line starts moving and I set
the hook. I fight the fish for a second and land it. Then our one spectator in our flotilla (Ward
Gardner) start hollering like the crowd did when KVD was catching toads at the classic. In the
meantime, we were watching Hunter and Dan hammering them. We continue on with nothing not
even a bite. We head to some glory holes and still nothing. We head back to where I caught the
first fish. Within in a couple of casts, I hook up with another fish. But this time, it comes unbuttoned.
That hurt because the bites were few and far between. A couple of pitches later, I set the hook and
I get that solid keeper in. It was one of those hooks set where some reason you set the hook for no
reason. We work that stretch of bank and go down it again. This time, I pitch next to a tree and a
get a hit before my jig gets to the bottom. I set the hook and tell Andy that it is a good one. After a
short fight, I land the 6 pounder. We are pumped now. Then again our one spectator in our flotilla
starts hollering again. For some reason he was following us around, LOL!! Then the bite just goes
away. We try different areas and go back to the area where we caught our keepers. I did manage
to lose one more fish. During all of this time, we got to watch Hunter and Dan put on a show and our
one spectator is no where around!!
Keeper count:
7/16 Jewel Eakins' Jig (Black/Blue Flash): 3 keepers
Final thoughts: Well it has been one of those years so far where things just don’t click. We had
fun and gave it our best. We knew it was going to be tough and we just couldn’t put anything
together. It goes that way sometimes!! I want to say a Big Congratulations to Hunter Braughman
and Dan Douglas. That was one awesome sack and day for never seeing the lake before!! I’m
looking forward to the next Owner tournament!!
See ya’ at the next tournament,
Jeremy Risley
