"In the Boat" presented by Jewel Bait Company
BFL Greers Ferry, May 10th 2008

I was paired with Garld Rickford and we had a short discussion with him about the next day. He
basically said "I am on small fish and we are running to the dam." With the lake being 25ft high and I
had no practice before the tournament I tried to put a game plan together for the next day. It
basically came down to fishing the trees - throw reaction baits, fishing the points - throw a rig.
We were boat 118 of 128 and it was a really rough ride taking off that late. After we settled into our
stopping point I realized we would be fishing around the brush for most of the day. The bite was on
when we got there but most of them were hybrids. I had to focus a few times a remember it was a
tournament day and I had to quit playing and start trying to catch the ones that counted. We moved
along the bank with what used to be a bluff line. The trees were in the water with a few submerged.
We were getting bites but they were small like he said the night before. As we started to locate the
schools we were able to figure out that it was a crankbait and fluke that seemed to work the best.
Gerald was throwing a tomato craw Deep Little N and I was throwing flukes. Our primary bite was
smallmouth with the occasional hybrid. I ended up changing baits probalby ten different times
because most of the fish I had biting my lures were not really taking it so I was trying to adjust and
hone in on what they really wanted. It was a huge struggle because I had only boated three
keepers for the day and lost 7 in various ways. I finally figured out they would really hold on to a
burrhead lures shakey head with a smoke purple worm. I boated 5 fish the last 40 min with that
combo. I ended the tournament in 50th place as everyone else seemed to catch fish as well. I had a
great time with Gerald and we both got to catch a ton of fish. The lake was really awesome to fish
with it high like that. I know it will probably be a long time before I get to see Greers Ferry like this
again but if it does I will have a better idea of places to fish and what to expect.

See you at Dardanelle.
