"In the Boat" presented by Jewel Bait Company
Tournament: Vince Miller's Super Team
                    July 27th, 2008
                    Arkansas River - Dumas Pool

Anglers: Jeremy Risley and Frank Leone
            18th Place - 5 bass - 12.39 pounds

Practice: Jeremy practiced alone. Although he had a slow day (4 keepers), he found which type of
jetties were producing fish. This allowed us to run a productive pattern during the tournament.

Tournament: Although we knew we would be fishing the river most of the day, we decided to start
in Annex. After an idle that seemed like an eternity, we finally made it in. We threw buzzbaits and
swam a jig, but both failed to produce a strike within a half-hour. We headed to the river. Jeremy
boated our first two keepers on a storm chug bug, the second fish being a good largemouth that
had to have jumped 3 feet out of the water. It jumped like a smallmouth!!! After the topwater bite
died, the jig bite started producing big time!!! We were throwing Jewel Eakins' Jigs and the action
was fast and furious for about an hour and a half. The key was finding jetties with very shallow
water around them. Jeremy commented that most of the spots we fished would be high and dry very
soon, more suitable for geese than bass. Anyway, it seemed like most of the fish bit right around
the jettie tip - pretty much textbook stuff. After about 11:00 AM, it got brutally hot and the bite
seemed to die. That kind of changed about 1:00 PM. The clouds rolled in and the bite picked up,
and I caught our biggest fish of the day (3-pounder) on a Lucky Craft RC 2.5. The coolest part was
that I saw the bass hit it as soon as I started to crank the lure!!! We were starting to get pumped
and Jeremy decided to make a last ditch run to a hot spot that he knew about in Coal Pile. When we
got there, another angler (not fishing the tournament) was anchored right on the spot Jeremy
wanted to fish. The worst part was that he was reeling in a keeper bass. We fished around him for
about 20 minutes, and were about to leave when I heard one "commode" flush the other anglers
lure. We watched him pull in a 3-pounder. The dude was fishing a spook with an ultra slow
cadence. It was kind of like a stake in the heart.......

Keeper Count: Jewel Eakins' Jig and Jewel Eakins' Flip 'N Jig (5/16 and 3/8 oz; Black/Blue Flash): 10 keepers
Storm Chug Bug (Baby Bass) : 2 keepers
                                WEC 1 Crankbait (Chartreuse/Black) : 1 keeper
Lucky Craft RC 2.5 Crankbait (Copper Perch) : 1 keeper

Final Thoughts: A fun day of fishing but we missed our goal of getting a check. Hindsight is usually
better than 20/20, but apparently we should have started in Coal Pile. Sounds like that was the
place to be......

See ya' on the flip side,

Frank Leone
