Tournament: Get5Bass Summer Series
June 18th, 2011
Lake Dardanelle
Anglers: Frank Leone/Kevin Holmes
28th place - 2 bass - 3.24 pounds
Practice: No practice.
Tournament Day: This week's event began with having to decide where to fish. I decided to pursue
a shallow crankbait bite on the river. I had to decide whether to go up the lake or lock through to
Pool 9. I checked the flow at 4:00 AM and it looked good - 12,000 out of Ozark and 8,000 out of
Dardanelle Dam. I decided to go up because I thought I had a chance for a better bag in
Dardanelle. When our number was called we head straight to a river bank about halfway up and
started chunking the Spro Fat John around. With no takers, I started to think that the shallow
crankbait bite may not fire. I was right. We hit several spots and only caught shorts (and not many
of them). At About 8:45 AM I switched to a jig and caught our first keeper (a 14" Kentucky). Not
exactly setting the world on fire. About 9:30 AM I pulled the plug on the upriver bite. Headed down
the lake and it was more of the same. We tried Frogs, Carolina-rigs, and more shallow cranking on
the lower end of the lake and just couldn't get anything to fire............
Keeper Count: Spro Fat John Crankbait (Citrus Shad): 1 keeper
Jewel Eakins Flip N' Jig (3/8 ounce; Black/Blue Flash): 1 keeper
Gear: Fat John Crankbait: Lew's Tournament Reel (5.4:1), Dobyns Champion 684 CB Rod, Sunline Sniper (14 pound)
Jewel Jig: Lew's Tournament Pro Reel (6.4:1), Dobyns Champion Extreme 704 C Rod, Sunline Sniper (16 pound)
Final Thoughts: Well, here at Get5 we bring you the good, the bad, and the ugly. This one was
the bad and the ugly. I prefer to fish shallow and I couldn't get away with it on this day. Definitely
needed to be offshore. Incidentally, I checked the flow when I got back home and learned they shut
Ozark Dam down at 5:00 AM. No wonder the bite sucked up there!. They ran 8,000 all day out of
Dardanelle, we should have locked down!!! I'm not saying we would have been competitive, but we
probably would have had more fun..........
See ya' on the flip side,
Frank Leone
