Mill Creek Bass Club Tournament
Upper Dardanelle - Spadra
03/16/08
Angler: Terrance Narveson
I fished with Bob West today and the day started out cold. A cold front moved in
overnight and morning temps were 37 degrees. This was a big change from the last
half of the week almost in the 50 degree range for morning temps. The river was muddy
and moving as the spring rains have left their mark again this year. High muddy water
that was cooling was not what I had in mind for the day.
We started in Little Spadra just past the bridge and moved in and out of the various
pockets throwing spinnerbaits, jigs, crankbaits, and rattletraps. The shad were moving
but the bass would not turn on our baits. Next we moved to the back of Little Spadra to
see if the water was cleaner. Once we got back there it seemed like the clarity had
improved to about 4 inches down. We didnt catch a fish here either. Our next stop was
Goat Island around to the marina. Again we did not catch a fish although we did have a
couple of bites.
I told Bob we should go up the river and hit a pocket I had fished before in the spring
and that it may have some clear water somewhere in the back. So off we went up
around Okane Creek. Once we got there the water was high and dirty as well but it was
just touching the bushes, so we proceeded to flip the bushes along the shore line. Less
than 10 minutes going down the bank Bob catches the first fish (keeper!). We knew
there had to be more so we fought the wind staying out of the trees throwing our jigs up
into the trash. After 1 pass we each had keeper and had caught 2 short fish.
Then we hit a rip rap bank and I caught another keeper but could not get any other
bites so we went back to the brushy bank for another round. I boated another keeper
for my third and with time running out and at the end of our brushy bank Bob gets his
second. It was s tough day for us but after talking to some of the other guys the fish
turned on about the same time we were catching ours. Most of the guys in teh club said
they caught thier fish later in the day just like us. My next tournament is BFL on Degray
and I am excited to visit that lake again and get in to some of the great fishing going on
there right now.
