It was here, the BFL season opener. I was excited to start another season in hopes of having a
great start and being able to finish in the top ten for the season. Not getting to practice before
the tournament, I had to rely on some of my friends to clue me in to what was going on around
the lake. From most of their responses it was going to tough day on the water, but with some
patience a couple of fish can take you a long way. I was paired with Eugene Moore III and he
was excited about what he had found days earlier.
We ran to the mouth of the Blakleys and started working a deep bank that had some shallow
points along the shoreline. The wind was blowing right across the points and I knew this was a
perfect setup for winter fishing. As we progressed up the bank throwing Jewel Eakins' jigs,
DLN's, DD 22's, and spinnerbaits we were unable to get any bites. It was not until the last wind
blown point that Eugene caught the first fish on a DD22. We moved around the point and about
half way down he missed a good keeper on a Eakins Jig that had taken his bait around a tree
before he could set the hook.
It was now 10 o'clock and I had not had a bite, but my hopes were not down yet as there was still
a lot of time left. About half an hour later I was slow reeling a spinnerbait in about thirty feet of
water and finally caught my first fish. It was a good one about 3lbs. We moved back to where we
started and progressed up the wind blown bank again with no more bites.
About 1:00 PM we stopped on a main lake point that was getting a lot of wind but we did not
have any takers. Our next move was to Crystal in a protected pocket with standing timber and
again no fish. With 25 minutes left we moved to mouth of Mt Harbor for one last chance.
Throwing jigs and cranking down by the boat houses still did not produce any more fish. It was a
long day but we each caught a keeper which is probably the most important thing to do in this
tournament as a Zero would make it hard to move up in the points later in the season.
I ended up in 45th place with 3.05lbs and still in the hunt for a top ten finish at years end. Now
that the season has started I cannot wait until the next time on the water.
