Zach King Wins 2008 Arkansas TBF State Championship!!!
Zach with two Dumas Pool monsters!!!!
Story and interview by Terrance Narveson
The Second annual TBF State Tournament was held this last week on
the Arkansas River (Dumas Pool). Zach King took home the top honors
and bragging rights that will stand for at least a year but will probably be
talked about for a while. He led the pack after day one and poured salt on
the wounds of everyone else as he demolished the field by more than
20lbs. He won the event with 54.15lbs for two days. I talked to Zach and
we discussed how he accomplished this awesome feat.
Get5: How was your pre-fishing for the tournament?
Zach: Everything went well on Monday & Tuesday, so well I didnt even
go on the water Wednesday. Each day I caught between 20 and 25lbs of
fish. I really had them dialed in.
Get5: What were your main baits for each day?
Zach: Primarily I used the Excalibur XR50 in Rayburn Red around the
submerged Grass but I found some fish in the floating mats and I was
punching it with a 4" Gambler Flappy Daddy.
Get5: Give us a run through of your first day.
Zach: I started in the Merrisach area and fished down one bank losing 2
good keepers and came to an area way in the back where I found a
floating mat and the wind blowing directly into it. I punched my Flappy
Daddy in the mat and caught the 7.02lb fish. Immediately dropped my
power pole to hold my position and after putting the fish in the livewell I
flipped out there again and caught a 6 pounder. I ended up catching a
limit and moved out to another area to save my water for the next day.
The next place I went to I had not even practiced at but it looked similar
to the place I had just left. I proceeded to cull out the three smaller fish I
had to give me my day 1 total of 26.41lbs.
Day 2: I went back to the place where I caught the big fish and had a limit
by 10:30. On the way out I noticed the water had come up some and
there was a big mat right there that looked like it may have enough water
to hold a fish. I flipped in there and caught a another 6lb fish. I couldn't
believe it everything seemed to be going right. I moved back to the place
I had found the day before and proceeded to catch another almost 7lb
fish and a whole bunch more. After the day was done I had 27.74lbs.
All my fish were caught on 7ft med Quantum Pt Rods paired up with Tour
Edition PT Reels. My Power Pole helped me keep the boat positioned in
the shallow water when I was flipping the mats or else I may have blown
up on the mat ruining my water.
On another note both of Zach's co-anglers for each day caught 20lbs of
fish. 90lbs of fish for two days is pretty good.
Congratulations Zach and Good Luck at the Regional this June.
